The 12th Annual DesignPhiladelphia Festival events are up! This year’s theme is HOME. In 2016, the DesignPhiladelphia festival will focus on events and programs that demonstrate how design can strengthen our connections to places, to ourselves, and to each other. From October 6th-16th universities, cultural institutions, city agencies, retailers, manufacturers and startups across the region participate in close to 100 events on topics spanning all design disciplines. All DesignPhiladelphia events are open to the public and a majority are free of charge. There will be no programming on October 11th and 12th in observance of Yom Kippur.

Signature Event: A First Look At a Fresh Look

Professionals and members of the public will get a behind-the-scenes tour of what it takes to rebrand a legendary organization: the up and downs, unseen designs and narratives, collaboration, and trust. Jane Golden and J2 Principals Alan Jacobson & Brian Jacobson will facilitate an engaging discussion with other members of the 

Mural Arts and J2 Design teams. Throughout the night, we’ll be asking for your artistic contributions so be prepared to flex your creative muscles.

Interactive events, including hands-on workshops and neighborhood tours that showcase Philadelphia’s historic and contemporary assets

Signature EventFive Senses of Home

Students tell personal stories through terrariums of home. Family recipe cards share the unique tastes that tell us we’re home. An iPad app investigates sounds of home, 

inviting visitors to create their own soundscape. The exhibition also prompts visitors to display their senses of “home.” As visitors add their perspectives, the exhibitioncontinues to evolve as it "pops up" around Philadelphia: at The Franklin Institute's Science Carnival, String Theory, and Asian Arts Initiative.

Signature EventStephen Burks Man Made

This one-day multidisciplinary design event features presentations from leading creatives who shape culture around the world. Eight speakers from Europe and the United States include: Nick Asbury, copywriting; Annie Atkins, film design; and Oskar Zieta, industrial design; Spencer Charles, lettering; Craig Dykers, architecture and interiors; John Ryan, interaction/media; Kelly Thorn, lettering; and Alisa Wolfson, branding.

Play encourages imagination, indepe

ndence, and creativity. Play teaches problem solving while encouraging social, intellectual and physical development. Infill Philadelphia: Play Space challenged designers, educators, childcare providers, public agencies, and communities to explore the unexpected ways that innovative playspace helps children and communities grow. Join us for an exhibit of their visions for Philadelphia’s future!​

The exhibit is part of Infill Philadelphia: Play Space, a partnership between the Community Design Collaborative and DVAEYC.

Signature EventNew Inside World: Light and Form

This exhibit explores how the cutting edge of interior design reflects, informs, and transforms our concept of the future and our lifestyle. 

There is no place where designed objects impact our lives greater, than in the home. This intimate relationship with products reveals much about our needs, our values, our desires, and our ambition. The works presented in this exhibition are the result of both a careful study of the past, and an intense gaze towards what is to come.
