2014 Festival

​Design in Flux is an exhibition about the state of current and future design practice, taking design as an unfinished entity. It features exploratory design work in 2D, 3D, analog and digital media, representing ongoing design research at Queensland College of Art. The exhibition aims to shed light on the presumptions that lie behind current design processes, and provoke us to think about new ways forward.

Does design education lack imagination? While trash heaps and sweatshops accumulate, design programs remain fixated on a curriculum fashioned at the height of Machine Age utopia. In 1981, a group of Philadelphia designers formed AIGA Philadelphia, the first local chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Presently the chapter is comprised of over 600 members. AIGA Philadelphia’s purpose is both integral and complementary to the national organization: to provide the highest standards within the profession and the business community and to stimulate interest and understanding of graphic design and visual communication through lectures, exhibitions, periodicals and other activities.

Since its inception, The Center for Art in Wood has been widely recognized as one of the most valuable resources for the education, preservation and promotion of the field of art made from wood. On October 10th, join Windgate ITE Resident Fellow and custom furniture maker Reed Hansuld for a talk about his work, which focuses on finding a balance between modern style, high quality craft, and functionality. In association with the Old City Festival on October 12th, the Center will also host artist wood-turning demonstrations in front of its headquarters and participate in the Marguerite Rodgers gallery vignette and scavenger hunt hosted at the TRUST space.

The International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA) is proud to sponsor their second annual design exhibition, featured in six of our Chapters around the country, including Philadelphia, New York, Arizona, Florida, Washington D.C, and Northern California. This unique Exhibit and Charity Auction event, IFDA TAKE A SEAT will feature up-cycled chairs, creatively redesigned by area members of the art, architecture, and design communities.
