On Friday, September 19th, Philadelphia will celebrate the international event known as Park(ing) Day. Dozens of interactive parks will appear on the streets of Philadelphia as artists, activists, planners, local businesses, and Philly residents take over metered parking spots, all in an effort to promote green and pedestrian-friendly urban spaces.

The 17th annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival, dubbed Brave New Voices, is coming to Philadelphia this week. Read more about BNV on the web here. The week of events, celebrating and challenging creative approaches to literary arts education and literacy development in young people, culminates this weekend with Hoodstock, presented in partnership with Philadelphia Urban Creators. This event will feature discussions and learning opportunities on gardening, permaculture, food justice, free breakfast, storytelling, live performances and community activism. Featured programming includes urban gardening, the MC Olympic Finals, and food grown by Philadelphia Urban Creators. Featured Presenters include host Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Astronauts Really Fly, among others.

The City of Philadelphia Commerce Department and the Community Design Collaborative seek nominations to identify the most distinctive, recently improved storefronts in Philadelphia. Nominations should be submitted online using this form. Entries will be evaluated by a jury consisting of economic development and design professionals, and the winning projects will be recognized at a ceremony on October 14. The event will highlight businesses that have demonstrated care and uniqueness in how they represent themselves to their customers and the public through their storefronts.

Five winning design submissions will be selected by a panel of esteemed jurors; each winner will receive a mirror, generously donated by auction sponsor IKEA®, to bring their concept to life.

Philadelphia (May 6, 2014) - Event registration is now open for the 10th annual DesignPhiladelphia Festival, a signature event of the Philadelphia Center for Architecture, being held October 9 through October 17, 2014. The Center invites any and all creative industry professionals working in the Philadelphia region to participate in this year's program via DesignPhiladelphia’s new website, developed by Jarvus Innovations. Also, for the first time, DesignPhiladelphia is accepting event proposals from local design students and emerging professionals through its SEED initiative, which will grant ten free spots on this year’s Festival calendar.

If you're thinking about participating in this year's Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby (KKSD) and you don't know where to start - consider taking tomorrow's workshops. Join John at Frank's Kitchen in Kensington, on April 12th, from 1-2pm, for How to Build a Kinetic Sculpture 2; an informative look at designing a kinetic sculpture from one of Philadelphia's originators of this art form! This class will cover basics including how to assemble a frame from torn apart bicycle frames, wheel considerations, durability considerations, steering systems, and more. RSVP here.
