Collab to Honor Branding & Design Visionary Bruce Mau with 2015 Design Excellence Award | Nov 20
Collab at the Philadelphia Museum of Art shares great design programs and exhibitions all year round, but its biggest event is the Design Excellence Award, coming up on Nov 20. This year the Award goes to the amazing graphic designer Bruce Mau. Internationally recognized for his achievements in design, including visual identities, brand systems, books, packaging, and exhibition graphics, Mau’s Massive Change Network, his most recent work, applies design tools and concepts to environmental, social, economic, and political problems.
Collab 2015 Design Excellence Award. Fri, Nov 20, 6:30 – 10pm. Lecture: Van Pelt Auditorium, Main Building. Reception: Perelman Building. Lecture + Reception $150. Lecture only $25. Purchase tickets. Discounts for members of Collab.
At Bruce Mau’s lecture on Nov 20, the winners of the Collab Student Design Competition will be announced. This year’s competition, “Selfie: Design Your Personal Brand Identity,” challenges area college students to create their own logo, web page, business card and 3-D object that represents their brand. A juried selection of 30-40 student designs will be exhibited Nov 18-20 in the Museum. Visitors may cast votes for the “People’s Choice Award” on computer kiosks, and a tour of the best designs will be given by a competition juror.
Tour Highlights from the Collab Student Design Competition. Wed, Nov 18, 5:30-6:30pm. East Balcony, Main Building. Admission is Pay What You Wish. Collab members-only reception: 6:30-7:30pm.
In concert with the Design Excellence Award, the Collab Gallery will feature the exhibition, Work on What You Love: Bruce Mau Rethinking Design. The exhibition highlights Mau’s innovative solutions for clients like Coca-Cola, the country of Guatemala, and Biomuseo in Panama City, presenting a portrait of a tireless designer at the vanguard of the field’s search for solutions to global concerns.

In collaboration with the Museum and NextCity, Bruce Mau will lead Fleisher Art Memorial, PennPraxis/ PennIUR, and Taller Puertorriqueno in public design-thinking workshops focused on issues specific to Philadelphia. During three workshops, Mau will present his Massive Change methodologies and demonstrate the potential of design to combine aesthetic with ethical and social considerations. Intended to introduce a wide audience to the power of design thinking and to bolster the efforts of Philadelphians to foster positive change in our city, the workshops will offer living examples of the principles Mau has integrated into his own practice.
