Cloud Gehshan Associates Open Studio
October 17 | 6:00PM to 8:00PM 400 Market Street, Suite 300 Free and open to the public. Cloud Gehshan Associates is an internationally-recognized environmental graphic design firm that specializes in placebranding, storytelling and wayfinding. As design consultants, they develop comprehensive graphic programs that engage, inform, educate and direct. Cloud Gehshan invites you to tour their studio in Old City during DesignPhiladelphia 2013 to get acquainted with environmental graphic design, learn about their work and meet the designers. Refreshments will be served.
Ian Goldberg, associate and senior designer for the firm, tells me the group will be showcasing their current projects, "from interpretive signage for the Philadelphia Water Department's 'Green City, Clean Waters' program to placebranding and wayfinding for the Al Doho Quarter in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia."
"Al Doho is a 15-city block neighborhood that includes offices, restaurants, hotels, markets (souks) and mosques. With bilingual placebranding, wayfinding and interpretive storytelling, Al Doho is expected to become a major cultural destination and will link to adjacent sites such as the National Museum, Murrabba Palace, historic Al Masmak fort, Salaam Park, and the Grand Mosque," Goldberg explains. He hopes that by attending their open studio, "people will have a better sense of what Cloud Gehshan does, a better understanding of what placebranding and wayfinding are and how dynamic and cross disciplinary the environmental graphic design field can be." Goldberg, along with Stephen Bashore, are the co-chairs of the Society for Environmental Graphic Design's Philadelphia chapter.
Looking towards the future "We've had the privilege of working with several Philadelphia area clients and we believe Philadelphia has a great, and growing, design community. With the growth and innovation of digital related design fields there are more and more firms that allow for collaboration on rich dynamic design projects." Looking towards the future, Goldberg tells me,"We're involved in projects that require digital signage and wayfinding tools more often - it's clear that the visitor experience we strive to enhance begins before the visitor physically arrives!"
