The International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA) is proud to sponsor their second annual design exhibition, featured in six of our Chapters around the country, including Philadelphia, New York, Arizona, Florida, Washington D.C, and Northern California. This unique Exhibit and Charity Auction event, IFDA TAKE A SEAT will feature up-cycled chairs, creatively redesigned by area members of the art, architecture, and design communities.

These unique chairs will be on display in various locations around Center City, from 10/2-10/10. Read our interview with IFDA Philadelphia President Kathleen Penney below.

What is your DesignPhiladelphia event?

The IFDA Philadelphia Chapter is proud to present: Take A Seat Charity Auction, with the majority of proceeds going to support Project Home.  The event features creatively up-cycled chairs by area design professionals.  These “seats” will be on display throughout center city from 10/2-10/10, then sold at auction at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, to raise funds for Project Home.  Lucky attendees will enjoy Stephane Starr events catering, and a cash bar, before heading into the Auction to try their luck at going home with one of these amazing chairs.

Can you tell us more about IFDA Take a Seat? Where can festival-goers see the exhibitions?

Take A Seat was conceived last year by our Chapters in New York, San Diego, and Japan.  The concept arose from a desire to raise funds for both Tsunami and Hurricane Sandy, relief efforts.  These three international chapters worked together to create this unique event, and were able to raise over $16,000 in their first year.  We have picked up the torch, along with five other chapters around the country, to raise funds for our select charities, all supporting “Helping Heroes at Home”.

You can see the chairs on display throughout the city from 10/2-10/10 at these locations: Macy’s, Sophy Curson, Freeman’s Auctioneers & Appraisers, Dane Décor, Moore College of Art & Design, and the Marketplace Design Center.

And this all comes together in an auction and gala? How did you choose Project Home for the charity?

Yes, the “buzz” has already started to build about the chairs, and they are amazing!  I got a sneak peek last week, and it is very exciting to see these stunning creations!  One of the chairs even brought tears to my eyes; it was so impactful in its design, and the effort that went into its transformation.

We selected Project Home for many reasons, but their slogan: “None of us are home until all of us are home”, resonates with the work IFDA members do every day.

Do you want to tell us more about IFDA Philadelphia?

IFDA Philadelphia is one of sixteen chapter; including an international chapter in Japan.  We are an organization of Furnishings and Design professionals, who also have a shared goal of philanthropy.  IFDA attracts individuals with a collaborative and inclusive sensibility, and professionals who believe in giving back, as much as getting ahead.  This shows in all of the charity work we engage in throughout the year, as part of our events and programming.

Does IFDA have any other events we can look forward to this fall?

We will have an exclusive night at the Philadelphia Magazine Design Home on November 5th, 6:00-8:00, with all ticket proceeds to benefit MANNA.  Come join us and learn more about what makes us special in our local industry!  Go to www.ifda.com, Philadelphia Chapter for more details.
