Night Market Philadelphia rolls through Lancaster Avenue

Philadelphia's Night Market is coming to Lancaster Avenue this Thursday August 14. This summer's Night Market will be on Lancaster Avenue between 35th and 39th streets. The stretch of Lancaster Ave will be blocked off to cars and trolleys to accomate for the night's 15,000 expected guests.

For the past four years, The Food Trust's Night Markets have invigorated commercial corridors across the city, drawing hordes for strolling, snacking, and engagement with the arts, while also providing an economic boost. On August 14, the phenomenon rolls into Mantua. The Mantua neighborhood may not be the most often considered destination for city residents, but it has been popular topic for preservationists in the city: through Funeral For a Home, Hidden City, and the recently disbanded Gray Area project dedicated to the neighborhood's Hawthorne Hall.

"It's been our goal to highlight communities that have great things to offer but may be considered off-the-beaten-path," says Diana Minkus, Night Market project manager at the Food Trust.

This Night Market features a long list of West Philadelphia favorites, including:

Calle Del Sabor, Gigi & Big R, Street Food Philly, Little Baby's Ice Cream, Lil' Pop Shop, Spencer ETA Burger, Weckerly's Ice Cream and local beer from Yards Brewing Company.

Plus music from the West Philadelphia Orchestra.

Be sure to check out the stunning architecture of the neighborhood's beloved landmark, Hawthorne Hall at 3849 Lancaster Avenue.

more about Mantua

From "Mantua has long been recognized as a community with many neighborhood organizations. The organizations work diligently to improve the lives of its citizens, especially the youth and senior citizens. In the 1960’s Dr Herman Wrice formed the Young Great Society aka YGS. YGS aimed to stop gang violence and provide social and recreational activities for the youth. YGS was model for youth and community organizations throughout the country. Dr. Wrice, Mr Jenkins and the YGS family were often sought to provide guidance to others aiming to curb violence and other social ills. In years to follow other worthy organizations such as Mantua Community Planners, Mantua Against Drugs, Groove II/III, MCIC, Concerned Citizens of Mantua, X-tra Miles, Mantua Civic Association, The HUB coalition and the list goes on. Some programs has since expired but the Civic Minded Residents continue to support their community. These programs are persistent. They continue to provide a slew of programs for Mantua and the surrounding communities."
