DesignPhiladelphia Launches 10th Anniversary Festival with PopUp Place on October 8

Features Reflecting Design Silent Auction of Works by World-Renowned Artists and Designers View and Bid Online September 23 – October 7 

PHILADELPHIA, Pa (September 23, 2014) – DesignPhiladelphia is celebrating its tenth year as America’s preeminent showcase for educating the public about design with its annual fundraiser and Festival kickoff - PopUp Place, on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 from 6:00-8:00pm at Bluecadet (1526 Frankford Avenue). The evening will feature the Reflecting Design Silent Auction of one-of-a-kind works imagined, designed, and donated by internationally-renowned, Philadelphia-based artists, architects, and designers, including KieranTimberlake, architects of the American Embassy in London; Tyler Hays of luxury furniture brand, BDDW; nationally and internationally-renown artists Adam Wallacavage, Ray King, Jack Larimore and Shelley Spector; Project Runway winner, Dom Streater; jewelry designer and Oprah favorite, John Wind of Maximal Art; and mosaic master Isaiah Zagar. (Complete list follows at the end of release.) Each participant was challenged to transform an unassuming IKEA® mirror into something daring and remarkable. 

This year, DesignPhiladelphia has partnered with Paddle8, the virtual auction house, to offer pre-bidding online. Starting September 23rd and ending October 7th, design enthusiasts from around the world may preview and place bids for these one-of-a-kind pieces at http://paddle8.com/auction/designphiladelphia. Live bidding will continue at PopUp Place on October 8, with proxy bidding available by phone. All proceeds of the Reflecting Design Silent Auction will benefit the year-round educational programming of the Center for Architecture and DesignPhiladelphia. 

PopUp Place 2014 will be hosted by Emmy Award-winning digital agency Bluecadet, in their new 8,400 square-foot office and production studio located in the fast-rising design scene of Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood. Established in 2007, Bluecadet collaborates with leading museums, cultural institutions, universities, and nonprofit organizations to educate, engage, and entertain through websites, mobile apps, interactive installations, and immersive environments. Guests will explore Bluecadet’s engaging interactive experiences while enjoying delicious food by 12th Street Catering and specialty cocktails byWestern Grace Brandy, Art in the Age, and Pilsner Urquell. Unique t-shirts will be screen printed for guests on site. The After Party from 8:00pm -11:00pm will feature DJ Handsome Sam, a group of Philadelphia’s favorite food trucks and Crabbie’s Ginger Beer.
