Architectural Glass Boot Camp is an interactive program developed to reinforce the importance of collaboration and communication in design. Boot Camp provides an opportunity for design professionals to interface with glaziers and enhances the educational experience by providing a forum for the exchange of information about complex construction issues. The Architectural Glass Boot Camp Storefront Workshop is pure hands-on fabricating. Attendees will work in pairs to fabricate a storefront section then work as a team to assembling into a 4’ x 8’ center set, flushed glazed project with guidance from professional glaziers. This immersive program transcends architect to builder through the fabrication process including screw spline assemblies and water management components such as flashing and end dams. Though interactive discussion, best practices related to sill preparation, perimeter sealant application and water deflector installation are discussed. Throughout the Workshop comparisons will be made between storefront and curtainwall systems. Design considerations impacted by performance characteristics of each will be discussed and demonstrated. Course participants will be able to select between storefront and curtain wall systems for commercial applications as they relate to occupant safety, environmental factors, system performance attributes, system limitations and proper product installation. For ten years, the Community Design Collaborative and the Philadelphia Department of Commerce have teamed up to shine the spotlight on Philadelphia’s storefront façades. We do this through the Storefront Challenge —a citywide contest that recognizes design excellence in storefront façade improvements. We have honored more than sixty businesses representing commercial corridors throughout the city. They include both new and multi-generational businesses. Their improvement projects range from a refreshed paint palette to a full makeover. Our Storefront Challenge honorees are worth celebrating. They’re living proof that storefront façades have a huge impact. Storefront façade improvements increase visibility, customers, safety, and reinvestment by neighboring businesses. They bring new color, energy, and fun to the corridors we walk and shop along every day. Celebrate ten years of transformation for Philly’s storefront façades with these two DesignPhiladelphia events. As the world population is set to approach 10 billion by 2050, humanity reckons with an agricultural infrastructure that is not only insufficient - but also wasteful, polluting, and prone to drought and famine. Agritecture Blurring the line Between Farm and City explores the inevitable assimilation of two worlds through aspiration, investigation and execution: from forward-thinking greenhouses in Ohio to sky-scraper farms in the UK. The event will include a lively discussion with featured speaker Dickson Despommier— father of the vertical farming movement— in order to examine food security issues from agro to agora. A cocktail reception with our guests and panelists will close the event in celebration of the DesignPhiladelphia Festival. WHEN: Thursday, October 11 – 5:00PM-8:00PM WHERE: 915 N.
