Window Design-Build Competition

Presented Annually In Late Summer

2017 Competition: TBA

The AIA Philadelphia Emerging Architect Committee (PEA) presents this two-part design competition to allow young designers the chance to produce a high-visibility design project to help promote young designer's skills.

Part One: The Charette
We bring together local designers, a panel of consultants, and participating store owners. The Charette consists of introductions, two rounds of design and consulting, feedback in between, and the announcement of the design winners within three hours. At the Charette, individual and team designers will be introduced to all the store owners. Each store owner will have up to five minutes to introduce and share their business philosophy and mission, merchandise, and audience. After these introductions, business owners will be asked to share their goal, objective, or need for a designed window display. Followed by a brief Q&A for you to ask any questions before the first design segment (approximately 45-60 minutes). At the end of the segment we will have our first pin-up, and you will be given feedback before returning to the second segment (approximately 20-30 minutes). Window design(s) will be selected at the conclusion of the event. Designers will be asked to indicate a budget and list of materials necessary to complete the window design for the final pin-up.

Part Two: Post-Charette
One to two weeks after the charette, winning design(s) are selected and designer(s) have one week to collect all materials needed for the construction of their design, and coordinate with the business owner when construction can take place at the business location. The following week is the unveiling of the window.
