Mecatestudio and NextFab will design and make custom item on display during festival
Mexico City is the World Design Capital in 2018 and DesignPhiladelphia is partnering with NextFab, the Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia and the Mexican Cultural Center to bring designers from Mexico City to design and make a special, custom item to be on display during the DesignPhiladelphia Festival. Mecatestudio, an architecture and industrial design firm, led by Sebastian Monjaras and Abraham Buenrostro have traveled to Philadelphia to partner with NextFab to design and fabricate a special item for DesignPhiladelphia.
“We are really excited that Mecatestudio and NextFab are partnering on this project and that we all get to share the great design stories of Mexico City and DesignPhiladelphia. Our mission is to shine a spotlight on Philadelphia’s great designers – but it’s also to tell the Philadelphia design story nationally and globally. Design is certainly a global business and making connections for Philadelphia to incredible design cities like Mexico City is not only good for Mecatestudio and NextFab, it’s good for Philadelphia.” says Rebecca Johnson.
Mecatestudio will spend almost two weeks working at NextFab and are focused on collaborating to create an object to display at Bok in the DesignPhiladelphia exhibit gallery.
"Our mission is to provide the best space, tools, and education for our members to use in the pursuit of their creative dreams - whether it's their hobby or their business. We welcome the opportunity to make a special connection with designers in Mexico City and to learn how they use making and fabrication in their architectural and industrial design business.” Eric Kaplan, NextFab.
The collaboration with the Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia and the Mexican Cultural Center was key to make the connection between Philadelphia and Mexico City designers possible. Both, the Consulate of Mexico and the Mexican Cultural Center, are highly committed to the promotion of Mexican avant-garde culture and arts in the Philadelphia region. For this reason, “the collaboration with DesignPhiladelphia and NextFab during the Philadelphia Design Week is extremely important to continue building bridges of understanding that facilitates the exchange of innovative ideas. In that sense, Mecatestudio’s work is an example of Mexico’s modern and innovative design which is conquering the world”, said Consul of Mexico in Philadelphia, Alicia Kerber-Palma.
