Desperately Seeking Enthusiastic Designers With A Knack For Molding Young Minds

Have a passion for architecture, urban planning, and design? Join our crew of volunteers to inspire the next generation of thoughtful designers!

Over the past two years, the Center has worked to increase design educational programming for K-12 students in Philadelphia. Our activities took place in public school classrooms, as part of summer camps at Philly rec centers, at the Center for Architecture and Design, and in partnership with other child-focused groups from around the city. Since 2018, we’ve engaged approximately 2,000 children through these fun, hands-on, STEAM themed activities, all of which are based on a curriculum that uses Architecture as a medium to understand a variety of school subjects:

  • 14 six-week Architecture in Education in-classroom workshops in Philadelphia Public Schools, grades K-6
  • 6 summer camps at Recreation Centers around the city in partnership with the Barnes Foundation
  • 1 six-week career discovery camp at Roberto Clemente Middle School in partnership with Congreso de Latinos Unidos
  • 36 two-hour Free Design Workshops for families on first Saturdays at the Center
  • 1 one-day career-discovery experience for girls at a real architecture firm in partnership with Girls, Inc.
  • 2 DesignPhiladelphia Kidsfest weekends full of activities in partnership with Smith Playground and Cherry Street Pier
  • 10 two-hour free-play design sessions along the Parkway in partnership with the City's Parks and Recreation's Oval+ summer extravaganza
  • 19 school trips to explore exhibitions at the Center and engage in hands-on design activities
  • We’ve also engaged over 30 local professional architects and designers as well as 20 passionate public volunteers to help present these programs. We hope to continue to expand the reach of our programs until every child in Philadelphia receives an introduction to design, how it impacts their daily lives, and how they can use design to shape their own lives.

We could not accomplish this work without the support of volunteers like you. You don’t need to be a professional designer to participate in many K-12 workshop opportunities.
