From Parking Space to Public Space: Saint-Gobain Parklet Design Competition Pops Up During AIA Convention

Come one, come all to the Saint-Gobain Parklet Design Competition! In conjunction with Saint-Gobain, one of the world’s largest building materials companies, AIA Philadelphia will showcase the innovative use of Philadelphia’s public realm through a pop-up design competition during the AIA National Convention, May 19-20.

If you’re not familiar already, a parklet is a sidewalk extension that provides more space and amenities for people using the street. Parklets typically extend out from the sidewalk at the level of the sidewalk to the width of the adjacent parking space. These pop-up parks are designed to provide a public place for people to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the city around them and this year, AIA attendees will have the opportunity to sit, relax and take in all the sights surrounding the AIA Convention, right here in the City of Brotherly Love!

Over the course of two days, AIA conference-goers and the general public will get the chance to explore two dozen parklets designed by local architecture and design firms and cast their vote for their favorite parklet. Entrants are encouraged to use the theme of this year’s convention, which is “Imagine,” as their source of inspiration for their parklet design.

Each day, the parklets will be judged and entrants will be awarded The Jury Award and The People’s Choice Award. The Jury Award will be given to a firm with the most innovative parklet as determined by a panel of judges, and the winners will receive $1,250. The People’s Choice Award will be given to firms with the most creative use of public space based on votes cast by visitors, and winners will be provided with unlimited bragging rights.

Not only is Saint-Gobain the presenting sponsor of the Parklet Design Competition, but the company will also have its very own parklet located at the corner of 13th and Arch streets for AIA attendees to explore. While Saint-Gobain’s parklet is not eligible to enter the competition, it will give visitors the chance to learn about the company’s new state-of-the art North American headquarters, which was designed to maximize the comfort and health of employees by taking full advantage of the extensive portfolio of building materials of Saint-Gobain and its family of companies.

With all the excitement surrounding this year’s AIA Convention, the Saint-Gobain Parklet Design Competition is not to be missed! Take a break from the expo floor, enjoy some fresh air and explore the imaginative places Philadelphia’s leading architects and designers will take you to, within a single parking space.
