The Story of Cappellini

Within every design of the Cappellini collection there is story. A story of a journey and an ambition to realize an innovative dream. A story of craft and technology and a message to “live beautifully.” In 1979, shortly after his architectural studies at the Politecnico Milano, Giulio Cappellini took over the family business. His earliest ambition – to relaunch a small Milan based furniture company, originally founded in 1946 by his father Enrico Cappellini, into a progressive Italian design brand, one which advocates a new international voice of contemporary design. Yes, a tall order, but soon after, a new foundation was born. The fruitful collaborations of Shiro Kuramata and Alessandro Mendini, quickly launched Cappellini into an iconic brand. But Cappellini also sought after the future of design. While working to broaden the scope of contemporary Italian design in the 1980’s with Paola Navone and Rodolfo Dordoni, Cappellini began producing the earliest, and in some cases, the most groundbreaking work of many emerging talents, the likes of Jasper Morrison, Marc Newson and Tom Dixon, with later collaborations of Marcel Wanders, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, and Nendo. By the early 1990’s, Cappellini became a launching pad for the world’s most innovative designers; leading the international design world, by producing both simplistic, universal, and unabashedly daring products. Many of these unique products are celebrated in the world’s most prestigious museums, such as MoMA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Today Cappellini continues as a trendsetting design company represented with Flagship stores in Milan, New York, Paris, Tokyo, and London. Moreover, Cappellini partners with the finest design shops throughout the world’s major cities. Recently Cappellini has opened a new shop-in-shop at Millesime, located within the Old City District of Philadelphia. This exemplifies the infectious beauty of a brand, which continues to communicate a clear, warm, innovative and accessible design language, furthering its footprint on design communities throughout the world. Meanwhile, Giulio Cappellini continues his role as art Director of Cappellini, while continuing his mission as a global ambassador advocating design, and reminding people to live beautifully.
