The Senior Architecture students were tasked with the Parklette design/build. (Architecture is one of the 6 'majors' that CHAD offers and which students choose to pursue their senior year.) The students had 5 days to come up with ideas, develop them, build some study models, prototype some details, assemble the materials needed, build the components and install them. Most of the materials had to already be in the building. My analogy is that it's like opening the fridge and figuring out what to make for dinner. The idea started with a desire to include the entire school community in the Parklette design and creation. They wanted everyone to contribute. They also wanted to engage the passing-by public: to offer an opportunity for community engagement and creation participation. What does home mean to you and how does your event express it? The Pennovation Works is a new home at the University of Pennsylvania where inventors, entrepreneurs, engineers, designers, and other creative minds can bring their ideas to reality. Facilities on the 23-acre site adjacent to Penn’s West Philadelphia campus offer a unique blend of offices, labs, and production space. The Pennovation Works is anchored by the Pennovation Center, a new business incubator that will provide lab space and a hub for collaboration and the exchange of ideas for innovators from all disciplines. Our October 6 event takes place in the Pennovation Center, where attendees will witness how the building’s northern façade bursts forth from the grid of the repurposed former industrial warehouse with illuminated angular panes of glass,...more

October 26, 2015 | DesignPhiladelphia, 2015 Festival
Thank you to everyone who made the 2015 DesignPhiladelphia Festival a success! Our Festival is the signature event of the Philadelphia Center for Architecture. From October 8th-16th we showcased the work of over 400 practicing architects, designers, and creative professionals and we demonstrated the force of Philadelphia’s design, tech, and collaborative business practices, in over 85 events across the Greater Philadelphia area, This year’s Festival kicked off at the Liao Collection, a striking gallery abounding with Antique Chinese and Japanese furniture, objects of art and textiles. Over 300 guests mixed, mingled, and experienced the debut of Pearl Street Passage. All weekend Pearl Street Passage sent vibrations through Chinatown. Philadelphians of all ages experienced 10 interactive art installations that filled Pearl Street. Live performances by Worldtown Soundsystem, J.E Kim, Mobile Funk Unit, and Setu Tribe got the whole street dancing. On day four Asian Arts Initiative’s 3rd Annual Pearl Street Block Party rocked the street as the whole neighborhood came out to break bread, dance, and enjoy public art. Search #pearlstpassage on Instagram to see the Pearl Street Passage transformation through the public’s eye. The nine-days of DesignPhiladelphia were jam-packed with exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations, tours, lectures, and events held in a...more
