DesignPhiladelphia 2017 offers a little bit of everything this fall including a series of special events for the youngins’. You definitely won’t run out of things to do with the family this month. Festivals, story times, educational activities, and other events are happening at the Center for Architecture and Design and other locations throughout the City. See below for a full list of programs that engage the future generation of designers in hands-on learning and play.
1. Building Bridges with Stick-lets™
October 7th | 10 AM – 3 PM
Stick-lets™ are flexible connectors for open-ended stick construction. Get to know this locally designed tool while you build anything you can imagine with your community during DesignPhiladelphia 2017. Our event will mainly focus on building bridges, but you can also learn how to construct a stable trellis for your garden, a cozy teepee, and some fairy dens for your favorite creatures.
2. DESIGN + BUILD: Cardboard City
October 7th | 11 AM – 3 PM
In celebration of the 100th birthday of our city's grand Benjamin Franklin Parkway, help us build a gigantic cardboard city. Stop by to try your hand at designing and building a skyscraper, a park, a row of houses, a school, a factory, some vehicles - or more! Then add your creations to our growing skyline and watch the cardboard city grow.
3. Family Program: Kahn-Struct
October 7th | 1 – 3 PM
Tap into your creativity by stacking, placing, and making structures using two and three-dimensional forms in a family-oriented building activity at FWM. Kids and caregivers will cut and paste windows, gates, and doorways onto structures to build a collaborative city. Screen-print your images of Louis Kahn’s architectural achievements as an exclusive take-away.
4. READ + MAKE: Leo, A Ghost Story
October 14th | 10:30 AM – 12 PM
Join us for a reading of Mac Barnett's delightful tale about a helpful spirit: "Leo, A Ghost Story", illustrated by Christian Robinson. Following the reading, make your very own pop-up card featuring a ghost of your own design.
5. URBAN FOLD Workshop: Build a Paper Metropolis
October 14th | 1– 2:30 PM
This 90-minute workshop was custom designed for the Center for Architecture and Design by a Stanford d. school professor. Kids will warm up with some rapid prototyping and 3-dimensional thinking exercises, then dive deep into their imaginations to collaboratively plan and build their dream city using Paper Punk kits (think LEGO meets Origami).
